Dalkeith, 117.V.s

Year: 2021

Client: Private

This contemporary home was designed and built by MAEK for a family in Dalkeith. Featuring 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a powder room and numerous living spaces, the home combines a sophisticated style with a hint of the industrial.

As you enter, you are greeted by a sculptural staircase that sweeps within the double height living and dining areas. The double height space is defined by the addition of exposed rafters, adding a touch of traditionalism to the contemporary. Timber flooring and large format tiling has been used throughout.

Within the dramatic living room void, a feature fireplace with an exposed flue runs the full height of the space into the rafters above. The first-floor corridor creates a suspended walkway that punctures through the void, allowing occupants to appreciate the lower spaces from above.

Sitting at the heart of the home is the industrial style working kitchen which has a refined edge that is complimented by selective use of organic materiality. A timber ceiling above highlights the lowered ceiling, providing a definition of space while adding warmth. A fluted solid timber island with custom made Italian stainless steel top features an integrated cooktop and sink prep area. Floating above is a blackened steel clad rangehood with open shelves on either side. Black granite finishes the remainder of the benchtops and splashbacks in the space.

Seamless indoor/outdoor living connects the kitchen and living areas to the alfresco, pool and gardens beyond. And a combination of steel and aluminium joinery, paired with exposed steel beams and columns, adds to the overall industrial aesthetic.

The master suite pairs slab-format porcelain with fluted timber and steel joinery, continuing the elegant industrial theme.

Externally, the finishes consist of organic salt throw concrete paired with off-form concrete and timber cladding, whilst metal standing seam cladding has been applied to the upper floor and roofing.
